How much dry food should I feed my dog per day?

Daily dry-food amounts follow from calories, not cups: compute the RER × factor target, divide by the kibble’s kcal/cup, then weigh in grams.

Item Detail
Step 1 RER = 70 × (kg)^0.75
Step 2 Multiply by factor (1.6 neutered adult; see calculator)
Step 3 Divide by kcal/cup on the bag (or kcal/kg × grams)
Step 4 Weigh portions — cups vary 90–130 g across formulas
Step 5 Subtract treats from the total, score BCS monthly

Worked example

60 lb (27.2 kg) neutered adult: RER ≈ 940 kcal; × 1.6 ≈ 1,500 kcal. A 390 kcal/cup kibble: ~3.8 cups — but grams matter: at 105 g/cup that is 400 g/day, split into two meals. Our calculator handles any weight, and the cup-conversion table translates for specific formulas.

The two silent errors

Error one: feeding by the bag chart, which assumes intact active dogs — neutered pets need 15–20% less. Error two: treats outside the budget; a 40 lb dog with 400 kcal of daily chews is eating a second dinner (our treat budget sheet fixes this). Verify monthly with the BCS card.

FAQ

Should I feed by cups or grams?

Grams. A “cup” of kibble varies 90–130 g across formulas and measuring styles; a $15 scale removes the error.

My dog finishes fast — add more?

Finishing speed is not hunger. Adjust by body condition, never bowl-emptying behavior.
