Definition: A ranking of how quickly a carbohydrate raises blood glucose compared with pure glucose.
Why it matters when choosing food
Dogs with diabetes or insulin resistance benefit from low-GI carbohydrate sources: barley, oats, sorghum and lentils rather than white rice or corn starch. Low-GI does not mean low-calorie, and it does not prevent obesity on its own.
